We’re proud to share that Dr. Siavash Shirzadeh Barough, BSL Postdoctoral Fellow, and Dr. Abhay Moghekar, BSL Principal Investigator, have received a $10,000 Special Recognition prize in Phase 2 [Build IT!] of the PREPARE Challenge—a national competition focused on the early prediction of Alzheimer’s disease. The challenge is hosted by DrivenData in partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

Representing the BrainSigns Lab, the team developed a machine learning model that predicts long-term cognitive decline using routinely collected clinical data. Their submission was recognized for its strong clinical relevance, transparency, and real-world impact, providing interpretable risk scores that could support earlier diagnosis and targeted intervention for patients at risk of Alzheimer’s.

During Phase 3, we plan to refine our model and share our findings from the process. With a commitment to bridging data science and patient care, the BrainSigns Lab continues to push toward actionable tools that help clinicians identify Alzheimer’s disease earlier—when treatment may be most effective.
