Brain  signatures  lab

The goal of our lab is to identify unique signatures of different brain diseases, in particular Alzheimer's disease and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. A signature is a specific and complex combination of biomarkers that reflect a biological state. They are more precise and specific than patterns of biomarkers or single biomarkers and reflect the complexity of the human brain.

           Research

We focus on blood and CSF signatures of brain disorders. While we are deeply involved in identifying biomarkers of disease states,  we are particularly interested in the pathophysiology of complex brain disorders. We employ various tools to perform proteomic and lipidomic assays on blood, CSF and brain from a range of subjects. We believe that a complex interplay of genetics, diet and environment influence the development of neurodegenerative disorders over decades. The pathways involved are likely disparate in different individuals though the outcome may be similar. Identifying these signatures requires following cohorts of individuals over their lifespan. Our goal is to identify specific protein and lipid signatures in early/mid life that increase the risk for development of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders of aging.

Time for Transitions

The BrainSigns lab is thrilled that two of its members, Alexander Davis and Eric Wesner were accepted to PhD programs to further advance their studies.

We are also excited to welcome two new members to our team – Aida Kamalian and Gianna Proscino.
